Designing a Tile Floor

Many tile floors go down in a simple pattern mainly because the homeowner feels that using intricate layouts may be experimenting too much and might clash with cherished designs in the home. This is why you see so many checkerboard-style floors or, for the avant-garde, diamond-patterned. They are afraid to do what they would like like to do because they are afraid the look may not translate well from the brain to the floor. This is why you need to connect the two.

Tile designs can be put down and checked over without tiling the whole area. Think of a floor as a palette and get out your straight-edges and design books. This works especially well if you have a new subfloor because the marks will show up. Start with a pencil so you can erase an marks.

Size: Before you start marking decide on the size you want for tile and your basic design: i.e. standard checkerboard, diagonal, subway, etc. So if you have a 13" tile you will have 13" squares. Get a sample of a 13" tile to use as a stencil.

Spaces: The spacing between the tile is important: 1/4", 1/8", etc. These will have to be drawn in, as well.

Draw: if your floor is large doing the whole area would be a daunting enterprise. The main purpose is to check out the design. So cordon off an area about 8' X 8'. Find the centerpoints of the area and begin to draw using the tile as a template. Remember the spacing.

Accent: Now, put in the accent pieces. These could be a 4" colored tile or a 2" strip on the edge. Whatever your fancy draw it in. If it doesn't fit erase it.

Paint: Some patterns require cutting so you don't want to cut your template just yet in case you have to use it again so take an hour or two and paint in a few squares with colors similar to what you want.

Now you will have a rough idea of what you want the are to look like and the sample tiles at the store will mean more because you will have an idea of what you want. Print off a few pictures if you can to take with you. When you buy the tile you can even place it over the rendering on the floor to make sure.
