Siding Installation
By Sheryl Robinson
Having new siding installed on your home is best left to the professional contractor. This is especially true if your home has many windows, doors and jutting rooflines. Depending on the siding you decide to use there are special tools, equipment and knowledge required for any of them to get it done correctly. There is also the possibility of having warranty voided that comes with the siding if it is not properly installed.
Don't risk losing your warranty and/or spending all summer trying to finish the job. Call a siding contractor to give you a free estimate and show you samples of the siding materials, colors and styles.

Siding Materials
All of today's siding materials are considered eco-friendly. All of them can be recycled and many are made from recycled materials.
The installation of new siding should include installing a thermal and moisture barrier behind the new siding. This is critical for older homes with poor or no insulation in the walls. The addition of the thermal and moisture barriers reduce the use of natural resources by reducing the amount of hot or cold air that enters the home through the walls.
Steel and aluminum siding tend to transfer heat and cold more efficiently than the other materials. You should consider this aspect if you live in an area of the country with either extreme cold or hot weather.
Vinyl, rough-sawn cedar and other wood siding are the least likely to transfer excess heat or cold into the home and they rapidly dissipate any accumulated heat or cold. Stucco is good choice for arid areas as it doesn't absorb much heat and tends to dissipate it quickly, as well.
Brick and stone are very low maintenance and will endure for decades. They are both recyclable and are often end up being used over on new buildings. They are not generally good thermal barriers. It may take a week or more of hot or cold temperatures to permeate the brick or stone but once adjusted they tend retain the temperatures for a while. Of course, with today's very effective thermal insulating materials, brick and stone are great choices for a beautiful home exterior.
