Siding Installation

By Sheryl Robinson

Having new siding installed on your home is best left to the professional contractor. This is especially true if your home has many windows, doors and jutting rooflines. Depending on the siding you decide to use there are special tools, equipment and knowledge required for any of them to get it done correctly. There is also the possibility of having warranty voided that comes with the siding if it is not properly installed.

Don't risk losing your warranty and/or spending all summer trying to finish the job. Call a siding contractor to give you a free estimate and show you samples of the siding materials, colors and styles.

Siding Contractors
A professional siding contractor will have the expertise, equipment and the siding manufacturer's blessing to give your home a brand new look. If you install the siding incorrectly it isn't as easy to fix as repainting a room if you don't like the color. Don't take chances with the look and protection of your home, call your local expert siding contractor today.

Siding Materials
All of today's siding materials are considered eco-friendly. All of them can be recycled and many are made from recycled materials.

The installation of new siding should include installing a thermal and moisture barrier behind the new siding. This is critical for older homes with poor or no insulation in the walls. The addition of the thermal and moisture barriers reduce the use of natural resources by reducing the amount of hot or cold air that enters the home through the walls.

Steel and aluminum siding tend to transfer heat and cold more efficiently than the other materials. You should consider this aspect if you live in an area of the country with either extreme cold or hot weather.

Vinyl, rough-sawn cedar and other wood siding are the least likely to transfer excess heat or cold into the home and they rapidly dissipate any accumulated heat or cold. Stucco is good choice for arid areas as it doesn't absorb much heat and tends to dissipate it quickly, as well.

Brick and stone are very low maintenance and will endure for decades. They are both recyclable and are often end up being used over on new buildings. They are not generally good thermal barriers. It may take a week or more of hot or cold temperatures to permeate the brick or stone but once adjusted they tend retain the temperatures for a while. Of course, with today's very effective thermal insulating materials, brick and stone are great choices for a beautiful home exterior.

PVC Foam Siding

Polyvinylchloride (PVC) siding is the undisputed king of the siding and has been for years. However overcapacity has evolved within the industry as many homeowners are shunning the flimsy material in search of better quality options.

The wood-fiber siding made a run for the crown but it was found that any cracks in the finish could introduce moisture to the wood filling and cause it to swell. This problem was alleviated by a composite wood-plastic compound in the same manner that composite decking is made. But this made the siding heavy.

The cement fiber industry became a leader in realistic-looking, firm siding. It was impervious to water and insects so that rot was never a problem and could be cut and attached with regular tools. As of today it is rapidly capitalizing on the losses to traditional vinyl siding.

A new clapboad siding which maintains the thickness and sturdiness of fiber cement without the weight is PVC cellular foam. The beveled siding is milled from actual boards of cellular PVC foam which means they are half the weight of fiber cement and create no harmful silica dust when cutting. In addition foamed PVC trim boards are milled on the back to the exact shape of the siding to form corners, valleys and butt trim just like the original clapboard pine.

The prefinished boards come in over 20 standard colors and more custom colors so there is no painting. They also come in 16-foot lengths of 4-, 6-, and 8-inch exposures. The cost is around $400 to $550 per square.

With insurance companies demanding better quality in building materials PVC cellular foam meets these requirements much better than the traditional vinyl siding which can warp, fade and blow off during a windstorm.
