One of the oldest forms of interiors for a home is covering the walls with paper or fabric. This began in China around 200 B.C. and spread to Europe during the Middle Ages. With the invention of large printing presses in the 1800's wallpaper became a staple in the homes of a growing America. The problem with paper-based wallpaper was that it stained and tore easily but in the late 1940's wall coverings were protected by plastic resins for a durable, easy-to-clean surface. Now many wall covering designs are vinyl coated and are virtually waterproof.
Compared to other forms of renovating, wallpaper installation is a small cost to change the appearance of an area in your home. Any wallcovering can be installed by a contractor or a skilled handyman in a matter of hours. The installation process starts with a careful measuring of the room, taking into account the placement of the windows and other obstacles. When you buy the wallpaper add 20% more onto your calculations for extra material. This ensures that you will have enough to match up the patterns or if a piece gets damaged during the installation.
The top center of each wall should be found and then a plumb bob suspended to the floor where another mark is made. By snapping a vertical chalk line you will have the absolute center of the wall and this is where you start the wallpaper.

Wallpapering is not a process containing voodoo rituals although there are some important rituals to follow:

2) Add 20%: For the same reason as #1 plus sometimes the designs have to line up and this means cutting off ends to accommodate this.
3) Find the center of the wall: Mark this on the ceiling and put a nail on the wall below it. Drop a plumb bob and mark the bottom.
4) Snap a chalk line: Do this from the top to the bottom mark.
5) Start at the chalkline: You have choice to align the paper at its mid-point on the chalk-line or start with each each on the chalkline.
6) Windows: If windows and mantels are in the center of the room put the first panel dead-center over top and, in the case of windows, underneath.
7) Design choice: Consult with a professional designer (usually at your wallpaper store) to get the right wallpaper for the job.
8.) Liner: if using a flock (velvet and fabric) or other specialty wall covering apply a liner paper first. This acts like "velcro" to hold the panels to the wall. Liner also works when wallper is being placed on a glass surface.
