The New Hot Tubs

The hot tub originated as natural hot springs where early inhabitants of an are would find therapeutic value in hot water. Because not all hot springs were accessible early civilizations recreated the experience with large urns with water heated by fires. Where the springs were accessible they built large pools to capture and hold the hot water, as in the Roman spas in Bath, England.

In the 1960's the hot tub became popular. These were constructed from cedar staves held together much like a barrel. A seat was put in and steps were build on the outside to enter the tall tub. Either a separate heater was installed under the tub or there were pipes leading from the heating system in the home. Jest were also included in the installation to bubble the water.

One piece-hot tubs slowly overcame the wooden variety because they could be made from fiberglass or plastic. This enabled the installation of multiple jets which could recreate the natural bubbling hot springs of the mountains. The jets work on a pump system which send water to the jets and vacuums water back into the system in a circulating manner. Hot air bubblers are now available which fill the tub with effervescence but without the pressure of the jets. The heated bubbles are very therapeutic.

Sanitation is achieved through filter systems and mild chemicals. Recently, ultra violet treatment began being introduced which was very efficient in killing bacteria without subjecting the bather to chemicals.

Energy-efficiency is also improving. With the introduction of insulated covers it is possible to maintain an even temperature for an outside hot tub while using the minimum amount of electricity or gas. These covers also reduce evaporation which equals a great water savings over the older tubs.

Hot tubs can be installed using the home's heating and water system or can be separate unit with a heating element attached to the home's power supply. They now can be upgraded to include music and television systems, as well as to include chromatherapy lighting which uses colored lights for a soothing effect.
