For thousands of years fences were built to either keep people and animals in or out of a specified area. Their function was more important than the way they looked and most fencing was wood, steel or concrete. Today, fencing still provides security with the added role of putting an attractive frame around the property.

Fence installation has come a long way from the old range fences and rock walls. A commercial chain-link fencing company, for example, will have specialized mobile equipment for placing posts and stringing thousands of feet of chain-link fence in a short period of time.

When searching for a fencing contractor it is important to have a clear idea about what you want around your property. Home fencing can include every type from cement block to an aluminum, gothic design. Therefore, all fence contractors are not all alike and most will have their own specialties.

Wood: Pressure-treated wood fencing is still the most economical way to have great protection with good looks. It can be built by a carpenter and then stained to any color you want, or just left to weather to a gray.

Vinyl: Rather than a single compound polyvinyl chloride is actually a laminated product with a heavy filler for strength and a protective ultra-violet resistant finish. This two material combination lowers the fencing prices because having a fence made from just the outer compound would be too expensive.

Aluminum: In many quarters powder-coated aluminum is the style king. It is light, easy to install and comes in a wide variety of colors and styles. In addition, aluminum will not break down if exposed to the elements.

Steel: The old high-maintenance, wrought-iron steel fences are a thing of the past as the new coated steel regains its place in the fencing market. As with aluminum, fencing contractors can put large section of steel fencing together in a very short time.

Cinder Block Walls

There used to be a time when outside walls were made of stacked stone. The marking of property lines had advanced beyond mere wood dividers as people began to live closer to each other. Instead of the porous wooden structures - which did not prevent the intrusion of noise, pets and vermin and rotted out in a few years - stone was a good physical barrier. However, as there came a need for walls to go higher they had to be reinforced and the stones were held together by mortar.

In the late 1700's the clay brick became popular and dividing fence walls became more structured and pleasing to the eye. By the mid-20th century the cost of laying bricks for structural walls made them a luxury item and concrete blocks began being manufactured at this time.

Concrete blocks are larger than standard bricks. This means that walls can be constructed much quicker than a brick wall. As well, cement blocks, and cinder-based blocks, do not have the water absorption of bricks and have a longer lifespan. bricks can shatter in an area where there is a freeze-thaw cycle.

Concrete block is larger and has less mortar joints: The fact that brick has more mortar joints means these partitions can be the weak link in a structure. They can also be reinforced by inserting vertical lengths of steel rebar in the voids in the block and then filling these voids with concrete.

But concrete blocks are so ugly and bricks look nice. This is true but concrete block walls make great platforms for stucco and other finishes. And the style of concrete blocks is changing, as well. Split-faced and colored designs having been hitting the market for the past decade. This technique gives the block a rough exterior face like stone. This works great for large structures such as highway dividers and sound barriers.

Pre-cast concrete in attractive faces is also becoming mainstream. rather than just blocks these pieces can come in many different shapes and sizes.
