Bathrooms these days are becoming larger and more decadent. A bathroom remodel can involve ripping out the tile, tub, shower, cabinets and completely replacing everything or simply updating the fixtures, tiles, and paint to create a new look. You should have a contractor look at what is currently in your bathroom and what needs to be replaced. With that information and a general idea of a budget you can determine what items you can remodel. Replacing flooring and tub/shower tiling will re-invent your bathroom. You can update your cabinets by simply repainting the doors and faces. You can make your bathroom more energy efficient by replacing plumbing and lighting fixtures to more eco-friendly ones. Open up your bathroom by enlarging a window or adding a skylight to bring in extra light. You may be able to enlarge the room itself by taking square footage from a nearby closet. Extra touches include door cabinetry, extra shelving, in-floor radiant heating systems, shower wall jets, heated towel bars, paint and wall coverings. A bathroom remodel can be small and simple or large and luxurious depending on your budget. Whatever your parameters are, you can be sure to enjoy a whole new look.

Planning your bathroom remodel

The biggest reason a renovation project does not turn out well is by not having a plan in place and not sharing that vision with your contractor. Before you begin any work on a bathroom remodeling project you should have a well thought out plan of exactly what you are doing and all the details involved in it. The first part of this plan is for you to decide what you are remodeling. Once you have decided that you should meet with your contractor to flesh out all the details of the remodeling project. Your contractor may bring in other professionals such as designers, architects or different trade contractors to help you finalize your ideas and get the work started. If you are still trying to determine the scope of your bathroom remodeling project, here are some things to keep in mind.

Secondary Bathrooms

Before tackling a master bathroom remodeling job, you may want to start small. Remodeling a secondary bathroom is not only a good way to get your feet wet, but it is very practical too. Chances are your children, guests, or other family members use your secondary bathrooms quite often. Since these bathrooms are generally small, you will want to get the most efficient use out of the space and make it a bright and updated room.

Utilizing space efficiently in a small bathroom is usually a remodeling goal. You should consider where you can add any cabinets or shelves. Look at corners, blank walls, or perhaps replacing a pedestal sink with a furniture unit for storage space. You may want to even replace a shower/tub combo with a single shower stall or walk-in shower. To bring more natural light into the room look into installing a larger window or even a skylight. Choosing a light wall color can also open up a small secondary bathroom.

Master Bathrooms

If you are remodeling the master bathroom of your house, chances are you want to create a luxurious and sumptuous retreat for you to get away from the stresses of the world. Remodeling the shower and tub can be a focal point of achieving this. Luxurious, oversized tubs come in every shape and material these days. You can choose from jetted, air jetted or soaking models. Another haven can be a walk-in shower. Showers with body sprayers, sound systems and ambient lighting can be just as soothing as a long, hot bath. Saunas are also a new item to be found in master bathrooms. New portable electric units make installation a breeze.

After focusing on the main bathroom fixtures you will want to pull your luxurious master bathroom look together by choosing cabinetry, stone or granite tops, modern lighting, plumbing and hardware fixtures. Other small details to consider are heated towel bars and in-floor radiant heat systems. Bathroom ideas are boundless, so it is important to have a plan and budget in place.

Starting Your Bathroom Remodel

After deciding upon the main ideas you have for our bathroom remodeling project you should start working with your contractor to finalize that vision. Remember that your contractor will bring new ideas and technologies to the table. You may need to hammer out your budget before deciding on which items you will be selecting. It is important to share your budget with your contractor so everyone can work towards it. You should get quotes from several contractors and meet with each. When finding a reputable contractor that shares your goals and you are excited about working with, put all details down in writing. Your contractor can provide you with a timeline showing what is being done when and an itemized list of all work being completed. When both you and your contractor have the same goals and expectations, your bathroom remodeling project is sure to be a success.

Big Bubble Tubs

For those of you who like to be hammered by spa jets in a Jacuzzi you won't be interested in the new tubs. These new bath conveniences are powered by air jets which provide millions of tiny bubbles for a soothing soak.

Patterned after the Japanese baths these tubs can be any shape but a lot of people like the square models. These have built-in seats and sometimes can accommodate whole families. Instead of the boiling, tumultuous blasts that leave parts pf your body bright red the bubbles are small making the tub water simmer. The result is a soothing feeling that lingers long after you leave.

Chromatherapy is also available with these tubs. This is a fancy word for "underwater lights." However, these lights are coded to the seven colors of the rainbow and you can program the changes. Feeding the tubs with water can be a classic, rain forest waterfall or a tube of falling water which barely causes a ripple as it pours down from th ceiling.

Of course the tubs are not cheap but you have to put it into prospective. The new bathroom is two or even three large areas which are becoming relaxation centers. They have couches, a serious audio system and 2 or 3 LCD TV's depending on where you are in the place.

So, think of this question: Why would you spend $7,000 on countertops and balk at spending the same amount on a huge soaker tub?
